Summary
Fast X was a box office disappointment.
The Fast & Furious saga has lost momentum recently, which creates a challenge for Fast & Furious 11.
Fast and Furious wasted at least three perfect opportunities to conclude the saga on a high note.
Fast X’s box office disappointment confirmed a harsh truth about the status of the Fast and Furious franchise. While Fast X ended on a cliffhanger and was designed to be the first entry in a two-part grand finale, Fast X: Part 2 has yet to begin filming. The initial strategy for the release of Fast and Furious’ two-part finale seems not to have worked perfectly, especially because of how poorly Fast X was received. Regardless, Fast & Furious 11 is happening, and it has a tough job ahead of it following its predecessor’s failure.
With several hits under its belt, including two billion-dollar movies, the Fast and Furious franchise has justified its existence, particularly in the 2010s. However, the momentum that the saga acquired after Fast Five has been slowly fading away. This is exemplified by the reception of films like F9, Hobbs & Shaw, and Fast X, the last of which was expected to end on a high note that would increase the anticipation for Fast & Furious 11, which did not happen. Despite Fast X’s post-credits scene and all the surprising cameos, the movie left a lot to be desired.
Fast & Furious Should’ve Ended A Long Time Ago (& Fast X Proves It)

Between the poor reception from critics and audiences alike and the disappointing box office performance, Fast X proved that Fast and Furious has become too big for its own good and should have ended a long time ago. Starting with Fast Five, the Fast Saga essentially established a non-written rule that stated every new entry should be bigger and bolder than the previous one. While this strategy made for some of the best Fast and Furious movies and turned the franchise into a box office titan, it also made it difficult for the saga to keep up with itself.

s had at least three perfect opportunities to end the saga on a high note but instead decided to recycle storylines and double down on the franchise’s tropes.
Fast X grossed $714 million at the worldwide box office, which, under normal circumstances, could be considered a satisfying result for a summer blockbuster. However, similar to other tentpole films from recent years, Fast X had a massive budget that made it difficult for the movie to be considered successful. The latest Fast and Furious movie had an estimated budget of $340 million, which does not account for marketing costs. Applying the usual 2.5 multiplier, Fast X most likely needed to make at least $850 million at the box office for it not to be considered a disappointment.
Fast and Furious Movies Worldwide Box Office (via The Numbers) The Fast and The Furious $206,458,372 2 Fast 2 Furious $236,410,607 The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift $157,794,205 Fast & Furious $359,347,833 Fast Five $629,975,898 Fast & Furious 6 $789,300,444 Furious 7 $1,511,986,364 The Fate of the Furious $1,235,534,014 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw $760,732,926 F9 $719,360,510 Fast X $714,582,375
Even without considering the enormous budget, a problem that almost every IP-based blockbuster is now dealing with, Fast X’s box office results were still disappointing. As a comparison, F9 grossed $719 million despite being released at a time when movie theaters were still dealing with the effects of the pandemic. Even Hobbs & Shaw, which did not include most of the Fast Saga stars and had little to no connections to the main films, grossed more than Fast X at the worldwide box office. Fast X’s poor financial results and critical reception suggest Fast and Furious has lost its touch.
Every Time Fast & Furious Could’ve Ended On A High Note
Fast & Furious wasted several great endings
F9 was also a critical disappointment compared to its predecessor, though its box office performance cannot be compared to previous entries considering the context in which it was released. Still, there have been indicators that Fast and Furious was overstaying its welcome since at least The Fate of the Furious, the first entry in the saga produced after Paul Walker’s passing. Fast and Furious had at least three perfect opportunities to end the saga on a high note but instead decided to recycle storylines and double down on the franchise’s tropes.
The sequence in which each character fulfills their dream with the help of the money they just got could not have been a better way to wrap up the Fast Saga, which started with heists after all.
Fast Five’s ending, during which every member of Dominic Toretto’s family becomes a millionaire following the heist in Rio, was the perfect opportunity to conclude the series. The sequence in which each character fulfills their dream with the help of the money they just got could not have been a better way to wrap up the Fast Saga, which started with heists after all. Fast & Furious 6 saw Dom’s crew getting their pardons, which could also have been a good way to conclude the series. Lastly, Fast and Furious didn’t need another movie after Brian’s farewell in Furious 7.

Between Fast Five and The Fate of the Furious, it seemed like the Fast and Furious franchise had become fail-proof, which naturally led to more sequels being made. Fast Five saw a massive jump at the box office compared to Fast & Furious (2009), which indicated that audiences were ready for more action-packed Fast and Furious films regardless of how many cars or street racing sequences were featured. Fast & Furious 6 did better than its predecessor, and it was followed by the first billion-dollar movie in the saga, Furious 7.

‘s post-credits scene was announced by Dwayne Johnson shortly after the movie premiered, but it’s unclear when it will be released.
While The Fate of the Furious didn’t outgross its predecessor, it still made over a billion dollars globally too. All of these results were indicators that whatever Fast and Furious was doing was working, which is no longer the case. Fast X being bigger than the other films in almost every way did not translate into the film’s quality, let alone into its commercial success. Fast X was supposed to be the first chapter of a two-part finale, which puts Fast & Furious 11 in a difficult position in terms of how it should be marketed.
Fast & Furious 11 Needs To Deliver The Finale The Saga Deserves
Fast X’s problems need to stay behind
Fast & Furious 11 is currently titled Fast X: Part 2 and is expected to premiere on April 4, 2025. Regardless of the title, the next Fast and Furious movie should try to distance itself from Fast X and instead deliver a standalone conclusion to the series. Fast & Furious 11 needs to be the finale the Fast Saga deserves after so many successful movies released across more than 20 years. The Fast and Furious series has had highs and lows over the past two decades, but the finale must be as satisfying as possible.

Related Fast & Furious’ Next Movie Must End The Franchise’s 9-Year Downward Trend The next Fast and Furious movie will have the responsibility of breaking the franchise’s near-decade trend of decline at the box office.
There have been rumors about Fast and Furious going back to its roots for the final movie, which is difficult to imagine considering how Fast X ended. Still, if the final Fast and Furious film finds a way to recapture some of the magic of the earlier films, it could deliver a good conclusion to the story of Dominic Toretto’s family regardless of Fast X’s problems. A smaller, more focused film is what Fast and Furious needs after a series of disappointing entries, but whether Fast & Furious 11 will pull it off remains to be seen.
