Star Wars star John Boyega takes over from Henry Cavill as DC’s Man of Steel in a stunning new Superman concept design.
The future of the DCEU seems a little uncertain right now. With the Warner Bros. Discovery merger now complete, the company may be taking a new approach to popular characters such as Superman. Following the merger, new CEO David Zaslav talked about the need to revitalize Superman and next year’s The Flash may lay the groundwork for a new take on the Man of Steel.
A New Superman
With The Flash drawing on the Flashpoint timeline, bringing in alternate realities and presumably shaking up the layout of the DCEU’s main continuity, it could be a perfect time to bring in a new Superman – or at least open a door onto other universes’ versions of the last son of Krypton. While Henry Cavill has proved a popular Superman so far, there have been calls from some fans for Warner Bros. to cast a Black actor as the iconic superhero – either as Clark Kent, or as Calvin Ellis of Earth 23 or Val-Zod of Earth 2. A new concept design proposes John Boyega in the role.
The concept design, by artist “subi.ozil,” was shared on Instagram and appears to draw inspiration from Val-Zod’s costume with its silver-on-red Superman crest. It depicts John Boyega as Superman and makes a compelling case for the British actor’s casting. If DC are looking for a successor for Henry Cavill in the role of Superman, Boyega could be a strong – if unexpected – choice. His stint as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy has certainly proved he has what it takes to head a major franchise.
There is no official word yet on when another Superman movie may land, though David Zaslav’s comments suggest this is something DC and Warner Bros. Discovery could be looking to get off the ground in the not-too-distant future. Whether Henry Cavill is likely to return as the character is also not yet known. If a new Superman is going to be introduced to the DCEU, this would almost certainly come off the back of the reality-altering adventures planned for DC’s The Flash.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash is inspired by the Flashpoint comic book storyline, which followed Barry Allen as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles.
In addition to Ezra Miller, The Flash also features Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as two separate versions of Batman, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul and Sasha Calle as Supergirl. Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Rudy Mancuso, and Luke Brandon Field are also on board in undisclosed roles.
