Fast & Furious 10 Needs Another Jason Statham Return More Than The Rock

Dwayne Johnson’s absence from Fast & Furious 10 seems to be a done deal, but Jason Statham could still serve the movie well. With Fast 10 and 11 confirmed to conclude the saga that started in 2001, there is not much time left for Fast & Furious to tie up loose ends. After F9 finally brought justice to Han, Fast 10 has the chance to expand on the previous movie’s plotline and close the controversial story between Sung Kang’s character and Deckard Shaw once and for all.

Both Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Shaw did not maintain their antagonist status for long, although the former’s redemption was much quicker — and less controversial — than the latter’s. Five years after the duo’s last appearance in a Fast & Furious film, the characters that once breathed new life into an evolving franchise are no longer a guaranteed presence in the series. Hobbs’ absence, however, seems to be far more irreversible due to The Rock’s feud with Vin Diesel.

Even without taking into consideration The Rock’s refusal to come back for Fast 10, Hobbs’ return to the main saga would not make much sense, given that the character’s history with the rest of Dominic Toretto’s family seemingly ended in The Fate of the Furious. Although Hobbs has come out of retirement thanks to the events of Hobbs & Shaw, the character does not seem to be up for any other major team operations as he did before. Jason Statham’ Shaw, on the other hand, still has a strong connection to a main Fast & Furious character as Han has finally returned to the series. By bringing the character back after so much speculation, F9 not only fulfilled the wish of many fans, but also made sure that Deckard Shaw can still have a future within Toretto’s team.

Jason Statham With Gun Fast and The Furious Seven

Before F9 retconned The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’s crash scene yet another time, audiences were demanding justice for Han in response to Shaw being way too easily forgiven by everyone and even attending Dom’s barbecue. While saving Toretto’s son and having his backstory given a new context in Hobs & Shaw helped Jason Statham’s character transition from a scary villain to a friendly good guy, Deckard Shaw’s redemption could have never been complete if it was not for the confirmation that Han was alive. Even so, Shaw’s previous actions, which could have actually led to Han’s death had it not been for Mr. Nobody’s plan, can still be brought to light in Fast & Furious 10 through a possible encounter between Han and Shaw.

While The Rock does not seem interested in returning to Fast & Furious, nothing prevents Jason Statham’s Shaw from being part of the franchise’s conclusion. Much more than Dwayne Johnson’s character, Deckard Shaw is still intrinsically tied to the most recent events of the main series and would make a great addition to the next film. Fast & Furious 10 has the chance not only to show an interaction between Han and Shaw, but also to finally validate the latter’s redemption.

Fast X Set Up Dom & Letty’s Perfect Ending (& Showed How The Franchise Will Continue)

Summary

Letty’s pregnancy could be the perfect ending for the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise.
Dom and Letty’s child could be the future lead of the franchise.
The pair having a child sets up potential conflicts and future stories within the ‘Fast & Furious’ universe.

Fast X may have quietly set the stage for the franchise’s modern ending — and planted the seeds for how the franchise could return in future years with a new cast. Debuting in theaters in 2001, The Fast & The Furious series has gone on to become one of the most enduring modern film franchises. The series has featured plenty of over-the-top and ridiculous plot turns over the years, with Fast X’s ending and cliffhanger setting up an explosive finale for the franchise. The movies have even laid the groundwork for how the series could return eventually with new characters.

Leaning into this idea might be the ideal way for Fast X: Part 2 to conclude. It could give the current stars of the franchise a sweet way to exit the story while setting up plenty of potential future stories set within the universe. One of the best ways to do this might have already been teased by Fast X’s characters under the guise of a joke. If true, then The Fast & The Furious is already looking to the future, even as it ends the current iteration of the series.

Fast X Teased Letty Could Be Pregnant With Dom’s Second Child

Fast X set up the possibility that Letty could be pregnant with Dom’s second child, which could quietly be the perfect way to end the current Toretto story. During a moment of calm between Dom and Letty in their bedroom in Fast X, there’s a brief gag about how Letty might be pregnant. While this is initially seemingly said in jest, it could be an ideal reveal to include in the upcoming final film of the long-running franchise. It would make a certain amount of sense within the context of the film series, too.

By the time of Fast X, the Toretto family has become a solidly stable family unit, with Dom and Letty raising Dom’s son Brian. They have a comfortable life, and the relationship between Dom and Letty has never been better. Now’s the perfect time for them to have another child, or at least it seemed that way before the chaos of Fast X’s ending unfolded. The reveal that Letty is pregnant could add another layer of danger to her part in the film’s action, and increase any tension that plays out in the upcoming Fast X: Part 2.

Dom & Letty Having A Kid Could Give Them A Happy Fast & Furious Ending

Giving Dom and Letty another child could also be the perfect set-up for the film’s ending. Fast X: Part 2 has been confirmed to be the end of the road for the franchise in its current form, with Dom and his allies pushed to the brink by the villain Dante Reyes and his machinations. It’s entirely possible that Dom and Letty could escape the events of the film and decide that the risk to their family by going into the field is too great, especially with a new baby on the way.

This could allow Dom and Letty to gracefully exit the franchise for a good reason, effectively retiring from field work to raise their family. If Dom doesn’t survive the end of Fast X: Part 2, then Letty being pregnant would gain a serious bittersweet edge that nevertheless underlines the franchise’s focus on family and persevering through tough times. Dom and Letty’s new child could be the ultimate way to close out the series, as it allows Dom and Letty’s story to end on a sweet and concluding note that sets the stage for future stories.

Dom & Letty’s Child Could Become The Future Leads Of The Fast & Furious Franchise
Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez), and baby in the Fast and the Furious franchise.

Naturally though, there will likely be attempts in the future to bring The Fast & The Furious franchise after its ending. Sequels remain a major factor at the box office, and there will inevitably be attempts to bring one of cinema’s most successful franchises back down the line. Dom and Letty having a child could help set the stage for an eventual next-generation story set within the same universe. This blood relation would easily allow future entries in the franchise to utilize the legacy framework that’s benefited other film series’ like Ghostbusters.

This could also set up unique characters to center future stories on, given the likely time-lapse between Fast X and any future stories. Having there be multiple children could even set the stage for the kind of familial conflict and drama that ended up erupting between Dom and his brother Jakob, which served as the central conflict of F9. Dom’s son teaming up or going up against Dom and Letty’s potential child would be the perfect set-up for future stories, so having Letty be pregnant for Fast X and its upcoming sequel makes a lot of storytelling sense.

Denzel Washington’s Rejected $7.3 Billion Franchise Role Would Have Shattered An 8-Year Box Office Record

Summary

Denzel Washington missed a potential box office record by turning down a role in ‘Fast & Furious.’
His highest-grossing film, ‘American Gangster,’ is easily surpassed by the earnings of ‘Furious 7.’
While he could have broken his record, Washington made the right choice in passing on the franchise role.

Denzel Washington had an easy shot to break an eight-year-old box office record, but he lost it by rejecting a role in the Fast & Furious franchise. The high-octane racing franchise has become one of the biggest in Hollywood over the course of more than 20 years. Furious 7 was a pivotal installment in this regard, as it became the first Fast & Furious movie to make over $1 billion, establishing a higher bar for future movies. The sustained popularity and success of the films has helped the $7.3 billion franchise recruit plenty of notable stars, such as Dwayne Johnson.

There was almost a time when Denzel Washington would have joined Fast & Furious even. Back in 2013, it was reported by Deadline that Denzel was approached for a role in Furious 7. Director James Wan and franchise producer Vin Diesel apparently wanted him to take on an undisclosed role. It is believed that the role in question was ultimately Mr. Nobody, the character Kurt Russell played in the film. However, Denzel turned down a role in Fast & Furious, and he cost himself a guaranteed new box office record in the process.

Furious 7 Would’ve Easily Become Denzel Washington’s Biggest Box Office Hit

If Denzel Washington had played a role in Furious 7, the actor easily would have broken his highest-grossing movie record. The seventh Fast & Furious movie made over $1.5 billion at the box office at the time. That is over five times as much as Denzel’s actual highest-grossing movie, American Gangster, made eight years prior. This came after a franchise record $147 million opening weekend, which led to a $353 million domestic haul. The remaining $1.16 billion of Furious 7’s box office total came from international territories.

While Denzel has been a major star throughout his career, his movies have never come close to reaching the heights that Furious 7 did. As of this writing, American Gangster is Denzel Washington’s highest-grossing movie after it made $269 million back in 2007. He has not managed to beat that mark in the 17 years that have followed. However, if Denzel had appeared in Furious 7, he would have smashed his box office record nine years ago and eight years after it was set.

Furious 7 might have given Denzel Washington a chance to easily beat his box office record for highest-grossing movie, but it was still arguably the right move to pass on this opportunity. If the role had been for Mr. Nobody as expected, he would have played a very minimal role in the franchise overall. He was an important supporting character in Furious 7 before having a reduced presence in The Fate of the Furious, with F9 seemingly killing him. That would be a fairly disappointing way to use Denzel Washington’s talents if he had joined Fast & Furious.

Vin Diesel’s $37M Shared Universe Failure Raises Big Questions About His Future After Fast & Furious Ends

Summary

Fast & Furious is Vin Diesel’s bread and butter – Bloodshot proved he needs it more.
Diesel doesn’t have a clear replacement after Fast 11; other projects lack the same impact.
Bloodshot’s failure jeopardized a new cinematic universe, after the disappointing box office draw.

Vin Diesel’s shared universe film failure in 2020 only raises more questions about the action hero’s future after his time with the Fast & Furious franchise comes to an end. The seventh highest-grossing film series of all time with a combined gross of over $7 billion, Fast & Furious is both an incredibly popular and long-running saga. During its run, the series has gone from focusing on street racing to combining fast cars with heists and espionage. Surprisingly, one of the few things that unites the series of action films is the importance the franchise places on family.

One key member of the Fast & Furious family is Vin Diesel and his character, Dominic “Dom” Toretto. Although Diesel’s Dom appeared in the very first flick, 2001’s franchise-spawning The Fast and the Furious, he has skipped a few of the 10 Fast & Furious movies. The street racer and patriarch plays a key role in the most recent franchise film, Fast X, but the actor announced that Fast & Furious 11 would be Diesel’s last appearance as Dom. While the Fast & Furious franchise may continue without him, Vin Diesel doesn’t have an obvious movie replacement lined up.

Bloodshot Should Have Been Vin Diesel’s Fast & Furious Replacement
Vin Diesel running in Bloodshot with red hues

Based on the Valiant Comics character of the same name, 2020’s Bloodshot was meant to be Vin Diesel’s Fast & Furious replacement. Given Valiant Comics’ rich history and massive lineup of superheroes and villains, Sony had plans for launching an entire shared universe based on the comic book publisher’s works. Unfortunately, Bloodshot’s lackluster performance not only tanked its own odds of getting a sequel, but put a damper on the studio green-lighting future cinematic universe films. If anything, Bloodshot’s abysmal $37.3 million box office draw proved it wasn’t quite the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) competitor filmmakers had hoped.

Bloodshot has his own plans, especially since he vowed revenge…

As in the source material, Diesel’s character is a soldier who was killed in action and then brought back to life with superpowers. The organization behind former U.S. Marine Ray Garrison’s superhero rebirth wants to control him, believing that Bloodshot is the ultimate weapon. Of course, Bloodshot has his own plans, especially since he vowed revenge against the person who killed both him and his wife. While Bloodshot features old-school-style action sequences and some smart ideas that are mined from the source material, the execution just didn’t live up to the premise.

Why Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot Failed (& Killed Its Shared Universe Plans)

Bloodshot faced some harsh reviews upon its release, with critics slamming its formulaic, seen-it-before story. While viewers were split on the film’s approach to action sequences, the most critical pointed out that fight scenes felt both uninspired and difficult to engage with, thanks to an over-reliance on quick cuts. A poor imitation of both superior action flicks and superhero movies, Bloodshot wasn’t very memorable. Between the poor reception from critics and the film’s disappointing box-office performance, the future of the Valiant Comics cinematic universe became something of a question mark after Bloodshot hit theaters.

Released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Bloodshot
‘s theatrical run wasn’t set up for success.

Unsurprisingly, Bloodshot’s lackluster performance didn’t immediately launch a new shared cinematic universe of Valiant Comics superheroes or even spawn its own sequel. The movie was meant to be followed by films based on Valiant Comics’ superheroes, including multiple movies based on Harbinger, as well as a crossover flick, Harbinger Wars. Although various film studios hold distribution rights for the many shared-universe properties, Bloodshot’s director, David S. F. Wilson, seems confident about the future of the Valiant Comics cinematic universe (via Den of Geek). By the end of 2020, a Bloodshot sequel starring Vin Diesel was confirmed by multiple sources.

Vin Diesel Doesn’t Have A Clear Fast & Furious Replacement After Fast 11

While Diesel has seemingly lined up another outing as the titular superhero in Bloodshot, it’s clear the movie series isn’t going to be as big as Fast & Furious. The cinematic universe project may get there eventually, but it isn’t the replacement Diesel needs after Fast 11. Rumors swirled about another Chronicles of Riddick movie, though little headway has been made since the series’ 2013 outing. Plus, Riddick isn’t a Fast-level box-office smash either. Similarly, there was some talk of another Xander Cage film, but Vin Diesel hasn’t made any firm announcements regarding his post-Fast 11 plans.
