Chris Hemsworth Feels People Don’t Take Him Seriously As An Actor Because Of His Bulking Up
It seems that even the God Of Thunder isn’t exactly immune to body image issues, and actually is very conscious about how people perceive his body.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Chris Hemsworth revealed that people see him differently as an actor because of the physique he has had to bulk-up for his performances in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Said the Norse God of Thunder, “I feel that people think there is a certain vanity attached to bodybuilding or bulking up. Had I been unhealthily skinny, or been required to put on unhealthy weight for my projects, I would be perceived as a serious actor. The training across 10 years of doing it is a full-time job. That and then a 12-hour shooting day – it’s a real grind.”
Hemsworth made headlines with his “Fat Thor” avatar back in 2018-2019, before Avengers: Endgame released. Later it was revealed that he was actually wearing a fat suit.
Eagle-eyed cinephiles would have noticed, that with each of the Marvel films since 2011, when he first appeared as Thor, Hemsworth has grown bulkier and muscular.
In the interview, he said that even though it is for the camera, actors like him need to bulk up in a certain way. One would assume that because of how films are shot, actors can sort of cheat and really get bulked up biceps.
He said, “That’s what you see the most. We consider the costume and if it shows a lot of shoulders, or are we gonna see the bicep or the traps. You want it to be balanced. You don’t want to look like Popeye with one section of the body blown up.”
Given that its been 10 years since he took up the role of Thor, and that Robert Downey Jr & Chris Evans both have exited the Universe with their respective characters, Hemsworth feels that he says he wants to try new projects.
It seems that audiences too would love to see him in different stuff, along with his Marvel Projects. After all, Extraction had one of the highest watch times among all of Netflix’s film releases last year.
Speaking about his upcoming projects, Hemsworth said that given the global lockdown, he has had plenty of time to prepare for Thor: Love and Thunder & Extraction 2, both of which will be shot in Australia.
This has allowed him to stay close to his family, and work out for both of his films.
He says that for Thor: Love and Thunder he is in the best shape of his life.
He said, “Having this time at home meant I explored different methods, to see how I can manipulate my body with just the right amount of powerlifting and bodybuilding workouts.”
