Vin Diesel’s $37M Shared Universe Failure Raises Big Questions About His Future After Fast & Furious Ends

Summary

Fast & Furious is Vin Diesel’s bread and butter – Bloodshot proved he needs it more.
Diesel doesn’t have a clear replacement after Fast 11; other projects lack the same impact.
Bloodshot’s failure jeopardized a new cinematic universe, after the disappointing box office draw.

Vin Diesel’s shared universe film failure in 2020 only raises more questions about the action hero’s future after his time with the Fast & Furious franchise comes to an end. The seventh highest-grossing film series of all time with a combined gross of over $7 billion, Fast & Furious is both an incredibly popular and long-running saga. During its run, the series has gone from focusing on street racing to combining fast cars with heists and espionage. Surprisingly, one of the few things that unites the series of action films is the importance the franchise places on family.

One key member of the Fast & Furious family is Vin Diesel and his character, Dominic “Dom” Toretto. Although Diesel’s Dom appeared in the very first flick, 2001’s franchise-spawning The Fast and the Furious, he has skipped a few of the 10 Fast & Furious movies. The street racer and patriarch plays a key role in the most recent franchise film, Fast X, but the actor announced that Fast & Furious 11 would be Diesel’s last appearance as Dom. While the Fast & Furious franchise may continue without him, Vin Diesel doesn’t have an obvious movie replacement lined up.

Bloodshot Should Have Been Vin Diesel’s Fast & Furious Replacement

Based on the Valiant Comics character of the same name, 2020’s Bloodshot was meant to be Vin Diesel’s Fast & Furious replacement. Given Valiant Comics’ rich history and massive lineup of superheroes and villains, Sony had plans for launching an entire shared universe based on the comic book publisher’s works. Unfortunately, Bloodshot’s lackluster performance not only tanked its own odds of getting a sequel, but put a damper on the studio green-lighting future cinematic universe films. If anything, Bloodshot’s abysmal $37.3 million box office draw proved it wasn’t quite the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) competitor filmmakers had hoped.

Bloodshot has his own plans, especially since he vowed revenge…

As in the source material, Diesel’s character is a soldier who was killed in action and then brought back to life with superpowers. The organization behind former U.S. Marine Ray Garrison’s superhero rebirth wants to control him, believing that Bloodshot is the ultimate weapon. Of course, Bloodshot has his own plans, especially since he vowed revenge against the person who killed both him and his wife. While Bloodshot features old-school-style action sequences and some smart ideas that are mined from the source material, the execution just didn’t live up to the premise.

Why Vin Diesel’s Bloodshot Failed (& Killed Its Shared Universe Plans)

Bloodshot faced some harsh reviews upon its release, with critics slamming its formulaic, seen-it-before story. While viewers were split on the film’s approach to action sequences, the most critical pointed out that fight scenes felt both uninspired and difficult to engage with, thanks to an over-reliance on quick cuts. A poor imitation of both superior action flicks and superhero movies, Bloodshot wasn’t very memorable. Between the poor reception from critics and the film’s disappointing box-office performance, the future of the Valiant Comics cinematic universe became something of a question mark after Bloodshot hit theaters.

Released during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,
Bloodshot
‘s theatrical run wasn’t set up for success.

Unsurprisingly, Bloodshot’s lackluster performance didn’t immediately launch a new shared cinematic universe of Valiant Comics superheroes or even spawn its own sequel. The movie was meant to be followed by films based on Valiant Comics’ superheroes, including multiple movies based on Harbinger, as well as a crossover flick, Harbinger Wars. Although various film studios hold distribution rights for the many shared-universe properties, Bloodshot’s director, David S. F. Wilson, seems confident about the future of the Valiant Comics cinematic universe (via Den of Geek). By the end of 2020, a Bloodshot sequel starring Vin Diesel was confirmed by multiple sources.

Vin Diesel Doesn’t Have A Clear Fast & Furious Replacement After Fast 11

While Diesel has seemingly lined up another outing as the titular superhero in Bloodshot, it’s clear the movie series isn’t going to be as big as Fast & Furious. The cinematic universe project may get there eventually, but it isn’t the replacement Diesel needs after Fast 11. Rumors swirled about another Chronicles of Riddick movie, though little headway has been made since the series’ 2013 outing. Plus, Riddick isn’t a Fast-level box-office smash either. Similarly, there was some talk of another Xander Cage film, but Vin Diesel hasn’t made any firm announcements regarding his post-Fast 11 plans.

10 Fast & Furious Hobbs Moments That Explain How The Rock Saved The Franchise

Summary

Hobbs’ addition saved Fast & Furious, taking action from street-level to global espionage adventures.
Hobbs vs Dom showcased shift to brutal fight scenes, setting tone for series’ bombastic growth.
Hobbs brought a new dynamic, showing enemies can become allies without joining Dom’s crew.

The addition of Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs to the Fast & Furious franchise expanded the scope of the films and breathed fresh life into the series, with his return for Fast and Furious 11 solidifying his importance to the series. The best sequences featuring the WWE veteran in the series played into the overall themes of the movies as they evolved from street-level action movies into globe-trotting espionage adventures. Hobbs debuted in Fast Five, as a law-abiding heroic antagonist to the heroic but criminal Toretto crew.

Hobbs helped save Fast & Furious and escalate the sheer scale of the series into something else. Hobbs’ arrival ushered in the openly bombastic second half of the series, setting up multiple appearances and even a spin-off film. Along the way, Hobbs highlighted some of the biggest themes of the franchise and proved that it didn’t have to be Dom Toretto and his “family” who drove the series forward. Here are the ten most important Luke Hobbs scenes in the Fast & Furious movie franchise and how they highlighted the evolution of the series.

Related 10 Funniest Scenes In The Fast & Furious Franchise, Ranked The Fast & Furious movies are filled with ridiculous action and funny reactions from the main characters as they find themselves in new conflicts.

10 Hobbs’ Introduction
Fast Five

Hobbs was introduced in 2011’s box office hit Fast Five, which helped reinvigorate the franchise and expanded the scope far beyond the street racing that had dominated the prior films. Hobbs’ first scene in the series establishes him as a direct contrast to the bombastic personalities of Dom’s crew. After Dom and his allies are framed for the murder of several DEA agents, Hobbs arrives on the scene to bring them to justice. Hobbs is quickly established as a prepared and dangerous adversary, with a vast amount of resources at his disposal.

Instead of the villains of prior films, Hobbs is shown to be driven by the loss of his fellow agents and keen to not underestimate his adversaries. This effectively sets Hobbs up as a unique counter to Dom in the films. While Dom and his allies may be the heroes of the film series, they’re still career criminals. Hobbs, by contrast, is established as an effective lawman with the confidence to warn local authorities away from his investigation. After four films of overtly criminal antagonists, Hobbs gives the series a more engaging type of adversary.

9 Hobbs Vs. Dom
Fast Five

Hobbs’ big one-on-one fight with Dom in Fast Five underscored an important new element to the Fast & Furious films. Whereas earlier movies in the franchise had based much of their action around high-octane car chases and races, the films were increasingly featuring more brutal fight scenes. After locating Dom, Hobbs tracks him down and engages in a brawl that sees both men showcase their physical strength and endurance.

While Dom was increasingly becoming an unstoppable force in the series, Hobbs presented an impressive counter. Their fight takes them through several walls, highlighting how the fight scenes in the series were growing more over-the-top as well. A far cry from the more grounded beats of the original The Fast & The Furious, Fast Five’s big Dom and Hobbs fight helped shape the future of the series.

8 Hobbs & Dom Team-Up
Fast Five

One of the most consistent elements of the Fast & Furious franchise, especially in later films, sees former enemies steadily become unlikely allies. This occurs in Fast Five, with Hobbs and Dom deciding to work together to avenge their respective allies killed by Reyes. Despite his crew doubting his plan to get revenge on the crime lord, Dom finds an unlikely ally in Hobbs. The sequence sets the stage for Hobbs to become a genuine ally to Toretto and his friends. As a result, Hobbs went from being a potential one-movie antagonist to a secondary hero for the franchise.

Notably, though, this doesn’t have the effect it had on Brian. While Brian began the series as an enemy of the Toretto family, he eventually abandoned his ways as an officer to join their crew. Hobbs doesn’t do that, notably telling Dom that he’ll ride with him until Reyes has been killed. It establishes that enemies can still become allies, even if they don’t become overt members of Dom’s group afterward. It expanded the scope of the franchise beyond the crew in ways that would permanently alter the dynamics of the series.

Sung Kang as Han leaned against a car and smiling slightly against and orange background in the Fast & Furious franchise Related 10 Fast & Furious Moments That Prove Han Is The Fast Saga’s Best Character The Fast & Furious franchise is full of great characters, but Han might be the best. Here are his 10 greatest moments across the entire Fast Saga.

7 Hobbs Recruits Dom & The Crew
Fast & Furious 6

Following their brief alliance in Fast Five, Hobbs ends up turning to Dom and his crew in the subsequent film, Fast & Furious 6. While the stakes and scope of Fast 5 exceeded the street-level origins of the series, Fast & Furious 6 was the film that truly elevated the series into the explosive world of super spies and experimental technology. This has remained the film’s direction since, with Hobbs’s recruitment of Dom and the rest of the crew playing a big part in establishing the franchise’s new tone.

Even while the sequence keeps things directly tied to the Toretto family drama by revealing Letty’s survival to Dom, the scene leans heavily into an action-spy genre tone that had been absent from the previous films. This is quietly one of the most important moments of the franchise. The subsequent escalation of the series likely wouldn’t have happened without someone like Hobbs around to bring them into a much bigger world.

6 Hobbs Vs. Shaw
Furious 7

Hobbs’ fight with Deckard Shaw in Furious 7establishes how dangerous the character is within the story. Although he’d already been set up as a killer in the previous film and deadly earlier in the film, Shaw’s fight with Hobbs underscored how dangerous the character is. The franchise increasingly relied on bigger and bigger action beats, with Furious 7 featuring some truly wild moments. The Hobbs and Shaw fight was an ideal way for the film to set the tone for the rest of the action to come.

It also used Hobbs and his previous skills as a means of establishing how dangerous Shaw was to the rest of the crew. If Shaw could hold his own and get the better of Hobbs in a fight, then the danger presented to the rest of the cast is very real. In this sense, Hobbs was able to alter the trajectory of the film (and the later entries in the series) by serving as a story device to establish the dangerous potential of new villains.

5 Hobbs With His Mini-Gun
Furious 7

Furious 7 was when the Fast & Furious films fully became cartoonish in their scope and action, and that’s not a complaint. While the series had already featured plenty of ridiculous moments, Hobbs’s role in the third act of Furious 7 helped cement the new direction. Flexing so hard that his cast breaks, Hobbs rushes to help Dom and the rest of the crew by, among other things, driving an ambulance into the fight and using a mini-gun against a helicopter.

It’s openly and unabashedly ridiculous in the best kind of way. It sets the stage for the subsequent films more over-the-top moments like shooting a car into space. Dwayne Johnson plays every beat with a perfectly straightforward and earnest approach that keeps the moment from derailing the film around it. Hobbs helped cement Furious 7’s increasing bombastic action as the norm for the series.

4 Hobbs Scares Little Nobody
The Fate of the Furious

One of the underlying themes of the Fast & Furious franchise is the importance of family. Dom’s insistence that his found family and blood relatives stick together against all odds has been at the heart of the series since the beginning. However, it extends beyond Dom and the rest of the Torettos. In The Fate of the Furious, after being sent to prison, Hobbs is met by Mister Nobody and his new partner, Little Nobody.

When Little Nobody brings up Hobbs’ daughter in an attempt to intimidate him into working with them, Hobbs casually breaks his handcuffs and pins the agent to a wall. As the series expanded beyond the Toretto family, Hobbs’ commitment to his daughter underscores how themes about family in the franchise could extend beyond Dom and the rest of his crew, serving as an ideal teaser for Hobbs & Shaw.

2:34 Image 147 Related Predicting The Ending Of All 13 Fast & Furious Characters In Fast 11 The Fast Saga is set to conclude with Fast & Furious 11 – or Fast X 2 – but how will Dom Toretto and his family’s stories come to a definitive end?

3 Hobbs & Shaw’s Prison Break
The Fate of the Furious

Despite his reluctance to accept an easy out of prison, Hobbs is forced into action in The Fate of the Furious when a chaotic moment gives Shaw a chance to escape. The prison break sequence is one of the highlights of The Fate of the Furious, and how well Hobbs fits into the franchise. The action is over-the-top and full of swagger, with Hobbs brushing off rubber bullets and casually throwing people around with ease.

As the series became more bombastic, Hobbs kept up with that morphing energy with gusto. The result is a fight that throws physics and reality out the window while Hobbs headbutts men in tactical gear and hits people with enough force to send them flying. The sequence is goofy and cool in equal measure, with big moments punctuated by Hobbs and Shaw casually taking down anyone who comes their way in a good tease of how the films would continue to become bigger and more ridiculous.

2 Hobbs & Shaw’s Island Fight
Hobbs & Shaw

While Hobbs is absent from F9: The Fast Saga, he got a bigger chance to shine in Hobbs & Shaw. Alongside his former enemy turned reluctant ally Deckard Shaw, Hobbs found himself facing off with a super soldier and his army of dangerous killers in their spin-off. More than anything, Hobbs & Shaw showcases how the series can continue and thrive outside the Toretto family and their respective story. The film features some tense car chases, bombastic fight scenes, and even a massive duel to close out the third act.

However, the more impressive moment comes earlier, with Hobbs and his reunited family — alongside Deckard and his sister Hattie — fighting back against Brixton and his forces. The sequence showcases how Hobbs works as a star in the series, fitting within the overall themes of the series while having a unique and cultural touch that separates his adventure from other movies in the Fast & Furious series.

1 Hobbs’ Cameo
Fast X

The ending of FX set up the return of several familiar faces for the upcoming franchise finale, including Hobbs. The mid-credits scene of the film sees Dante Reyes, Jason Momoa’s campy villain and the apparent final villain of the franchise, send a threat to Hobbs for his role in the death of his father. The sequence reinforces the idea that Johnson’s role as Hobbs in the series can still carry weight, even after he’d been absent from the prior film. Hobbs’ return to Fast & Furious underscores the important changes that the character brought to the series.

His return promises an even larger scope for the upcoming franchise finale Fast and Furious 11, which is impressive given the sheer scope of the prior entry in the series. Hobbs has been a crucial piece of the franchise since his introduction, helping shape the overall direction of the series into a much larger series. His cameo in FX and involvement in Fast and Furious 11 highlights this, proving the series wouldn’t feel right closing out without an appearance from Luke Hobbs.

Fast & Furious 11 Needs John Cena’s Return To Deliver On The Movie’s Biggest Promise

Summary

Fast & Furious 11 will conclude the main saga, but it needs John Cena for the biggest movie yet.
Cena’s return as Jakob Toretto may be absurd, but his star power is crucial for the final installment.
Despite the character’s fate in Fast X, the franchise’s history of surprising returns leaves room for Cena’s comeback.

Fast & Furious 11 will end the franchise’s main movies, and despite how ridiculous his return would be, the film needs John Cena. The franchise began in 2001, and although Fast & Furious will still continue through the Hobbs spinoff and some other potential projects, the upcoming movie is set to be the conclusion to the main saga after more than two decades of movies. As a result, the film needs to include John Cena, but his character’s fate in Fast X indicates that the star is unlikely to feature in Fast & Furious 11.

John Cena first appeared as F9’s antagonist, Jakob Toretto, but wound up joining Dom’s crew at the end of the film and assisting them in Fast X. This continued Fast & Furious’ villains turned hero streak and appeared to make Cena’s character a mainstay until the finale. However, Fast X seemingly killed off Jakob towards the movie’s climax, putting his return in doubt. While Jakob returning from the dead would be ridiculous, Fast & Furious 11 needs him, meaning the franchise will have a tough decision to make if they want to bring back Cena for their final installment.

Fast & Furious 11
is scheduled to be released in 2025.

John Cena’s Presence Is Needed To Make Fast & Furious 11 The Franchise’s Biggest Movie Yet
Fast & Furious 11 Needs John Cena’s Star Power To Make It A Truly All Star Cast

Given Fast & Furious 11 is gearing up to be the franchise’s biggest film yet, John Cena’s presence is required to make it as star-studded as possible. Sung Kang returned to the franchise in F9, and with The Rock and Gal Gadot back for Fast and Furious 11, the franchise is clearly getting all its biggest names back for the final movie. The franchise also introduced Brie Larson, Alan Ritchson, and Jason Momoa to the film series in Fast X, proving Fast and Furious 11 is set to have an all-star cast to ensure a strong close to the saga.

This means dropping John Cena at the final hurdle would feel like wasted potential, as his presence would undoubtedly add to the movie. His reputation would help boost anticipation for Fast & Furious 11 and potentially its box office. Despite making $714 million, Fast X was a box office disappointment due to its huge budget. While several Fast & Furious installments crossed the $1 billion threshold, having Cena appear alongside these huge stars could help Fast & Furious 11 replicate this success. The final movie needs all its major characters, and leaving out Cena’s Jakob Toretto would be a huge blow.

2:03 Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto from The Fast & Furious Franchise

Related Vin Diesel May Have Spoiled Fast & Furious 11’s Ending With $2.7 Billion Movie Comparison Dom’s death happening in Fast & Furious 11 may have been spoiled already, with Vin Diesel comparing the upcoming movie to another big franchise.

Why John Cena Can Return To The Franchise Despite It Being Ridiculous
John Cena’s Jakob Toretto Returning From The Dead Wouldn’t Be A Franchise First
John Cena as Jakob Toretto in Fast X surrounded by money Custom image by Yeider Chacon

Although John Cena returning to the franchise would be absurd, Fast & Furious 11 can still pull it off. Over the years, several Fast & Furious characters have been supposedly killed off, only to return. Han, Gisele, and Letty have all survived seemingly fatal incidents, only to return in a future movie. While this trend may be problematic for some franchises, Fast & Furious often leans into its over-the-top, extravagant nature, meaning these returns worked despite being ridiculous. The movie series’ track record means that, despite Jakob Toretto’s sticky situation, the character’s fate isn’t necessarily sealed.

Jakob Toretto being alive wouldn’t be overly shocking given Fast & Furious’ history, but it would still provide the movie with a big moment and give Jakob some extra motivation to help his brother. Given Cena is great at both action and comedy, he is the perfect fit for the franchise and could make his return scene emotional yet hilarious. It may be a bit of a tired trope for the action series, but having a character return from the dead one last time would be worth it to ensure John Cena is part of Fast & Furious 11.

FX’s Record-Breaking Show Proves How Fast & Furious 11 Would Benefit From This Character’s Return

Summary

Fast & Furious 11 may bring back Elle, played by Anna Sawai, as her rising popularity could add to the film’s success.
The franchise has a history of bringing back fan-favorite characters, expanding the cast with each installment.
Anna Sawai’s recent success in Shogun proves she is a talented actor, making her return as Elle in the next movie a smart move.

With Fast & Furious 11 just around the corner, the upcoming film could still take advantage of Anna Sawai’s rising popularity. Following the success of Fast X in 2023, a followup was quickly put into production to pay off that film’s cliffhanger ending. Since it’s been rumored that this next installment could be the last for the Fast & Furious series, it would be a perfect opportunity to bring in multiple characters from the franchise’s past.

Fast & Furious already has a habit of bringing back fan-favorite characters. Fast Five, which originally could’ve ended up as the final entry in the series, went all out and brought together the casts of disparate installments, such as Tej, Roman, and Han. The series even complicated its own timeline for a while in order to bring back Han, who had been killed off in the third film The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift but still had a prominent role in the fourth, fifth, and sixth films. Since then, the recurring cast of the series has only grown larger.

Related Predicting The Ending Of All 13 Fast & Furious Characters In Fast 11 The Fast Saga is set to conclude with Fast & Furious 11 – or Fast X 2 – but how will Dom Toretto and his family’s stories come to a definitive end?

Fast & Furious 11 Should Bring Back Anna Sawai’s Elle
A custom image of Eva Mendes as Monica and Anna Sawai as Elle from the Fast and Furious franchise. Custom image by Yeider Chacon.

Anna Sawai appeared in F9: The Fast Saga as an adopted daughter of the character of Han. It’s revealed that Han actually faked his own death in order to go into hiding to protect Elle as a young girl as her DNA is the MacGuffin driving the plot. The villains are seeking a weapons system known as Project Aries, and only Elle’s DNA can activate it, so Dom and his crew set out to rescue her. In the end she’s shown joining up with the rest of the crew and becoming an official part of the Toretto extended family.

Elle didn’t make an appearance in Fast X. This was likely due to the relatively large cast of characters, both new and returning, with only a limited amount of space to focus on them. Along with that, despite her connection to Han she was only really involved in F9 as a plot device and thus would not have had much to do during Fast X. This is a missed opportunity because in the wake of F9 Anna Sawai has established herself as an exciting up and coming talent.

Shogun Proves Why Anna Sawai Should Have A Bigger Role In The Fast & Furious Franchise
Anna Sawai as Mariko gazing forward resolutely yet enigmatically in a scene from Shogun

FX’s new miniseries Shogun has proven to be a bona fide hit, both critically and commercially. One of the standout aspects has been Anna Sawai’s performance as translator Mariko. She’s played a prominent role in the story, and will no doubt continue to grow in popularity as an actor thanks to it. She’s also one of the lead roles in Monarch, which has been successful enough to be renewed for a second season.

Fast & Furious has already established her character prior to these breakout roles, and the franchise is now presented with an excellent opportunity. If they bring back Elle for the next installment, it will only benefit from Anna Sawai’s rising star, and her own career would only be boosted by the move as well. If it’s true that Fast & Furious 11 will be the final entry in this long-running franchise, then it only makes sense for the filmmakers to pull out all the stops and bring back all the characters they’re able to.
