The review scores for Fast & Furious Crossroads are in, and things aren’t looking pretty for the game from developer Slightly Mad Studios and publisher Bandai Namco, as it’s been referred to as the worst game of the year by at least one particularly unhappy critic. Fast & Furious Crossroads is a licensed game from the franchise that has spawned a huge fan following thanks to its exciting, action-packed brand of car chases and racing stunts.
Things initially seemed fairly promising for Fast & Furious Crossroads during development, as the game managed to net some major stars – Sonequa Martin-Green and Asia Kate-Dillon – to lend their voices to two new lead characters. Early looks at the cars depicted while playing the game also gave fans of the Fast & Furious series hope that the most important part of any driving game – the machines themselves – would be handled with care, even if the Fast & Furious Crossroads graphics looked a little dated.

Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, it appears things went bad for Fast & Furious Crossroads. Early review scores have been unanimously poor, and Bandai Namco didn’t even provide outlets with early access to the title prior to its launch, for reasons that now appear to make quite a bit of sense from the publisher’s perspective. Though there aren’t enough scores as of this writing for Metacritic to have an average yet, we’ve compiled some looks at those reviewers who’ve managed to play enough of the game to form an opinion already, and it spells out a grim reality for the latest Fast & Furious video game.

“Don’t rush out to get that season pass, basically, and I wouldn’t be reaching into my pocket to hand over any amount of money for the rest of it any time soon either. Perhaps the biggest frustration, coming to Crossroads as a Fast & Furious fan, is those glimpses of what could have been, and seeing an enjoyable enough slice of series lore being under-served so severely by the game behind it. In a saner, less cruel world Crossroads might have been put to rest when it became clear it just wasn’t going to work – as it is, it’s just been left to limp out in this sorry, sorry state. What a disappointment.”

“Being a studio that in recent years has given us great games like Project Cars and Project Cars 2, it feels really tragic that Slightly Mad has sunk so incomprehensibly low. There is no doubt in my mind that Fast & Furious Crossroads is the worst game of the year so far. Don’t touch it, not even with a dipstick.”
Push Square – 3/10 – Liam Croft
“How Fast & Furious Crossroads wound up as a full-price release will forever remain a mystery. It is lacking in every department possible, from shallow and repetitive gameplay through to abysmal visuals that belong on the previous generation of consoles. Not even the most committed Fast & Furious fans should subject themselves to this monstrosity. That is unless you want to have a good laugh alongside Vin Diesel.”
GameSpew – 3/10 – Richard Seagrave
“Overall then, Fast & Furious Crossroads is a serious disappointment. There’s a gleam of the franchise’s over-the-top action now and again, and some of the cutscenes hint at the cheesy humour the movies are known for. But those moments are few and far between. Underwhelming visuals and uninspiring mission design stop Fast & Furious Crossroads from being a good game – but it’s the terrible, terrible handling that relegates it into ‘bad’ territory.”
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what makes Fast & Furious Crossroads such a miss for so many of the reviewers here, since they tend to outline different issues in their reviews. Criticisms about campaign length, which is apparently as short as five hours, seem certainly valid for a title that’s being sold at the price of a full game. The aesthetics of the cars, which looked like it could be a selling point early when the game was announced if they were polished up, have not gotten any better than past glimpses at them. If there’s a saving grace for truly diehard fans, most of the reviews out now seem to suggest that, if nothing else, Fast & Furious Crossroads at least tells a good Fast & Furious story, right down to the series’ trademark charm. As video games based on movies can be hit or miss, at the very least Slightly Mad Studios has managed to get down what makes the franchise’s heart beat.
Still, with at least one person willing to refer to it as the “worst game of the year so far,” it doesn’t seem like the future is bright for Fast & Furious Crossroads. That’s bound to be a disappointment for the franchise’s many fans, who will now have to wait until next-gen consoles are available for the chance to get a good Fast & Furious game to sink their teeth into.
